The Personal "Pe" + Clitic Doubling (Pe + dublarea clitică)

Romanians say "Îl văd pe Ion" — literally "I see him, Ion". When the direct object is a specific person (or a pet, or a pronoun), Romanian marks it with the preposition pe and, at the same time, "doubles" it with a matching clitic pronoun before the verb. This double marking feels strange to English speakers but is completely standard, and skipping it is one of the most audible learner mistakes. It is not a rare rule: in a 2.5M-line corpus of spoken Romanian, pe marks a direct object about 40% of the time it appears, and a doubling clitic accompanies roughly 28% of noun objects.

The rule in one line

Specific human direct object → clitic + verb + pe + object. "O cunosc pe Maria" (I know Maria): the accusative clitic o doubles the object, and pe marks it.

Îl văd pe Ion.

I see Ion.

îl (him) + pe + Ion.

O aștept pe sora mea.

I'm waiting for my sister.

o (her) + pe + sora mea.

Îi cunosc pe copii.

I know the children.

îi (them) + pe + copii.

When to use pe

  • Proper names of people: O văd pe Ana.
  • Definite/specific people: Îl aștept pe profesor.
  • Personal pronouns: pe mine, pe tine, pe el, pe cine, pe care.
  • Pets and personified beings: often take pe too (Îl cheamă pe Rex).

When NOT to use pe

Leave out pe (and the doubling) for things and for non-specific people. Compare:

pe vs no pe

With pe (specific person)Without pe
O văd pe fată. (I see the girl)Văd o fată. (I see a girl)
Îl caut pe director. (a specific one)Caut un director. (any director)
Îl cunosc pe Ion.Cunosc orașul. (I know the city — a thing)

pe with "care" and questions

In relative clauses and questions about people, pe is required with care and cine: "Omul pe care îl cunosc" (the man whom I know), "Pe cine aștepți?" (Whom are you waiting for?). Notice the doubling clitic still appears ("îl cunosc").

Examples

Îl cunosc pe fratele tău.

I know your brother.

Pe cine cauți?

Whom are you looking for?

O iubesc pe bunica mea.

I love my grandmother.

Văd un câine pe stradă.

I see a dog on the street.

non-specific animal → no pe.

Fata pe care o știi este aici.

The girl whom you know is here.

pe care + doubling o.

Îi ajut pe prietenii mei.

I help my friends.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the doubling clitic: it is "Îl văd pe Ion", not "Văd pe Ion".
  • Using pe with things: say "Văd casa", not "Văd pe casa".
  • Adding pe to non-specific people: "Caut un doctor" (any doctor) has no pe.
  • Forgetting pe with pronouns and care: "pe mine", "pe care", "pe cine" — not "mine", "care", "cine" alone as objects.

Lookup Tips

  • Ask: is the object a specific person (or pet/pronoun)? If yes, use pe + a doubling clitic.
  • The clitic matches the object: îl (him), o (her), îi (them m.), le (them f.).
  • Things and vague "a/an" people take no pe: "Văd un film", "Caut o carte".

Frequently asked questions

Why do Romanians say "îl văd pe Ion" with two object markers?

It is standard "clitic doubling": the clitic (îl) and the preposition pe both mark the same specific human object. Both are required — "Văd pe Ion" or "Îl văd Ion" sound wrong.

When do I use "pe" before a direct object?

When the object is a specific person, a pet, or a pronoun (proper names, definite people, pe mine/tine, pe care, pe cine). Not for things or non-specific people.

Which clitic do I pair with pe?

The accusative one matching the object: îl (him), o (her), îi (them, masc.), le (them, fem.). "Îl aștept pe Ion", "O aștept pe Ana".

Do inanimate objects take pe?

No. "Văd casa" (I see the house), "Citesc cartea" (I read the book) — no pe, no doubling. pe is essentially for specific people.
