Konjunktiv II (würde · hätte · wäre)
The Konjunktiv II is German's "would" mood — for polite requests, wishes, advice, and unreal (hypothetical) situations. In everyday speech most verbs use würde + infinitive (Ich würde gern kommen — I'd like to come). A handful of very common verbs prefer their own short forms instead: hätte (would have), wäre (would be), könnte (could), müsste (would have to), wollte/sollte, and the polite favourite hätte gern (would like to have).
The everyday form: würde + infinitive
For most verbs, the natural spoken conditional is a conjugated form of würde plus the infinitive at the end — structurally just like a modal.

The short forms you should just memorise
A few high-frequency verbs sound stilted with würde and use their own one-word Konjunktiv II instead. These are the ones you actually hear.

Unreal conditions: wenn …, dann …
For hypothetical "if … then …" sentences, the Konjunktiv II appears in both halves. Note the verb-final word order after wenn.
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen.
If I had time, I would visit you.
Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich viel reisen.
If I were rich, I would travel a lot.
Wenn du üben würdest, könntest du es.

Polite requests: hätte gern & möchte
To order or ask for something politely, German uses hätte gern ("would like to have") and möchte ("would like"). Both are Konjunktiv II forms and are far softer than the plain present tense.
Ich hätte gern ein Glas Wasser.
I'd like a glass of water.
Ich möchte bitte zahlen.
I'd like to pay, please.

Common Mistakes
- Using **würde** with sein/haben/modals: say **Ich wäre**, **Ich hätte**, **Ich könnte** — not "Ich würde sein", "Ich würde haben".
- Forgetting verb-final order after **wenn**: it is **Wenn ich Zeit hätte, …**, not "Wenn ich hätte Zeit".
- Confusing **hätte** (would have) with **hatte** (had) — the umlaut is the whole difference.
- Ordering with the plain present ("Ich will einen Kaffee") where German expects the polite **Ich hätte gern** / **Ich möchte**.
- Dropping the infinitive to the wrong slot: with **würde** the infinitive goes to the end — **Ich würde dir helfen**, not "Ich würde helfen dir".
